Question
When and where did did rock climbing begin? Who was the master
mind?

Answer
Dear Whitney----Brits in the Lake District invented rock climbing in the 19th century, and Germans in Dresden followed soon thereafter.

If you go to any major library, you will find many books on the history of climbing.

The British Alpine Journal is a good log of yearly activities, and the Brits have hundreds of books on the history of climbing.

In the US, the American Alpine Club is in Golden Colorado, and it has a library that is open to the public.
