Risk assessment and safety

2016/7/22 8:48:19

Question
What risk assessments and safety issues need to be taken into account before rock climbing?

Answer
Dear David----you are rowing up the right stream....but strictly, risk assessment is something corporations and governments undertake, not climbers.

I have written the only treament that uses the risk assessment approach to rock climbing-------, "Ultrasafe, A Guide to Safer Rock Climbing,"

I am an OSHA safety officer, and I decided to apply the risk assessment approach to climbing--------the result, I have climbed for 30 years with only minor injuries to myself.

In summary:

1. Conduct research befoe leaving the house---route descriptions, trip reports, topos, guides, weather reports, gear assessment...helmit??? Partner???
2. Check out conditions at the base of the climb----other climbers, bees, snakes loose rock.......
3. Consider the descent before starting.
4. Review hazards as you ascend...changing weather, bad gear, loose rock.
