Question
I am a Junior in High school I weigh 140 pounds have been rowing since 7th
grade and I pull a 1:57.0 split on my 6k (23.24) on my 2K i pull a 1:48.2 (7:16)
what kind of college could i be recruited, for example Union college.

Answer
Hi Will: Your 2K time is right at the average for 16-17 year old male lightweights and your 6K is about 18 seconds above (i.e., slower) the average time.

Most college crews are typically actively recruiting for scholarships at most the top one to four people on a typical high school crew.  The ones I've seen get scholarship offers had a lot of race experience and won medals in major regattas.  They also rowed or tried out at junior National camps.  Some were great single scullers who converted over to eights.  Do you fit this resume?

That said, nearly all crews always want walk-ons and non-scholarship rowers to fill out their boats.  I joined crew because of an ad on a telephone pole at my college.  So whether you go to Union College or Harvard, even if you don't get a scholarship offer, you will get a chance to make a boat and be on the crew for four years.

I recommend you e-mail or write the coach of your college(s) of interest and introduce yourself, along with providing a resume of your rowing experience.

Good Luck/AP
