College Rowing?

2016/7/22 9:48:10

Question
Hi! I would like to row for a college but and my 2k time is currently 7:45 which I know isn't that good. I am a Junior and I"m 6'1 and 220lbs. This year I am hoping to bring down my erg score but I was wondering what do colleges look for and when 2k time should I be at by the end of my Junior year?
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Sara: For heavyweight women your age, your time is in the Top-25%.  At your height and weight, I think you have the potential to break 7:30, which would put you in the Top-10%.  That should be your goal by the end of junior year.

Your second question on what colleges is not as cut-and-dry.  Now there are some coaches out there who really only care about erg times.  However, most coaches look at many factors, such as on-water experience, amount of race competition, success in races, versatility in the boat (e.g., can row port, starboard and has stroked races), your grades, your participation in other sports and 2K/5K erg times.

I'd say with your size and erg scores, you have the potential to be recruited for a rowing scholarship.

Good Luck/AP
