Tough time to be stalling out???

2016/7/15 18:29:03

Question
Hello, I have a 23', with an i/o Mercruiser, which I've had for about 1.5 seasons.  At low speeds (3 -6 mph), such as when I'm attempting to maneuver into my tough to access slip, the engine stalls out (probably 90 of the time).  It will also stall out the majority of the time when I'm, let's say, pulling up to a local fishing spot and want to just drift and i throw it into neutral.  It will restart, pretty quickly, but sometimes I feel like I have to pump so much gas to get it to turn over, I'm going to flood it (which actually did happen on one occasion in the middle of the channel).

I've heard this could be an indication of needing a new carburetor...or that it might have something to do with the lower unit.  ???

Answer
Hi Kevin...thank you for selecting the undersigned to reply to your question.

Although I'm not a mechanic, the stalling symptoms you've described are likely not caused by the lower unit, but by the carb or reed system. Best you consult a reliable and knowledgeable marine mechanic.
