Mercruier fuel pump

Question
Hi, I have a 1968 mercruiser 120hp and the fuel pump went bad. I ordered a new carter fuel pump and its exactly the same as the old one except for one thing. It has an extra port below the outlet port to the carburator. What is this for? Now my old fuel pump has a restictor line that connects on each side of the fuel pump. Could this port be for that? Hope you can help.
Thanks, Jerry

Answer
the port you are asking about is a safety feature. if the diaphram in the fuel pump fails the port will let gas go to the carb.there should be a hose barb on the carb that you connect a line from to the fuel pump. if not you should be able to add one.
hope this helps.  bruce
