warm up distance

2016/7/15 11:21:47

Question
hello sir, may i know for how much distance should every racehorse irrespective of height, weight, efficiency be given a warm up till the starting point by the jockey for a race? i mean, a furlong or two a free canter?

Answer
An ideal warm up includes jogging for a minute or two and then galloping one to two minutes including about a furlong at sub maximum speeds. A 2 minute mile pace or faster should be fast enough for the lungs, heart and muscles to be ready for the race. This should be done 3-5 minutes before post time. During this time, the horse should be jogged, then walked to the gate. This amount of time would equal about a mile of warm up. Horse can be seriously injured, lack performance and/or have EIPH if not allowed to fully warm up before a race. The horse should be sweating and his veins should be visibly bulging if he was properly warmed up.
