belaying and epilepsy

Question
Hello,
I am a novice boulderer living in Berkeley, California who would like to try sport climbing. the problem is, I don't feel comfortable belaying someone because I'm an epileptic: my partners life could be at risk if I had a seizure. I've been told that a, 'gri gri' might be the solution to my problem because it would back up my belay if I had a seizure. Is that true? Is the gri gri nearly fail proof?

Answer
David,
I think a Gri Gri is a good solution, provided your partner does fall when your having a siezure and fall into a position where he cannot get to a climable spot, for instance an overhang.  Lots of if's.
On solution could be sport climbing in a gym where there will always be people nearby.  Though the same is true of nearly all sport climbing areas (especially Berkeley). There are always people around who could help.

Good Luck

Jeff
