Windsurfing Footstraps

2016/7/22 14:41:39

Question
I own two boards a Bic Techno2 and a older Mistral XLE neither of which have a rear/centre footstrap position, previous boards that i have used did have the centre footstrap. It may be my mind/memory playing tricks but I remember that the centre strap was more comfortable and easier to use. Could you please explain any differences between using the different configurations and if there is any available kit that is designed to add a centre strap to a board that does not have one and if my boards will work satisfactorily with a centre footstrap.
Regards Graham

Answer
Hey Graham,

I very sorry for the delay in responding to your question. I've been having some problems getting connected to the AllExperts site.

To answer your question, I fully understand your feelings about a single center rear strap being comfortable and easy to use. Most older boards are that way and what I'm used to. As for changing your current boards to that style, I wouldn't suggest trying to convert. You can buy inserts for foot straps but mounting them can be a lot of trouble. You have to know the exact make up of your board shell and the type of core. The epoxy that would secure the inserts to the board and seal the hole you have to cut to install them, has to be compatable with your shell and core. If it isn't, the epoxy can eat through the core and ruin your board, or it can eat the shell and ruin the board. Then, if you do find the right stuff and do the project, if there is any leakage of water into the core, you have another problem to deal with.

So, in short, bear with the strap system you currently have. If there are multiple locations for the straps, locate them as close to the middle as you can to provide a bit more comfort.

As for changing locations, having the straps out as far as they go puts you on the outer edge of the board. This position is more for speed and helps keep the rail down for upwinding. With the straps in as far as they go will give you a more upright stance which helps for wave/swell riding and freestyle maneuvers. Try different locations to find what works best for you and your riding style.

Hope this helps.
Keep on sailing,
Windlover
